More WB/HB Live Action Films Coming

With the surprising success that Fox had with "Alvin and the Chipmunks", Warner Bros feels they have a chance to cash in on a live-action/CG 'toon film with "Tom & Jerry".http://www.variety.com/VR1117998898.html
It has worked before for Warners with the "successful" Scooby-Doo franchise as well as 2 films featuring the original Warner Bros 'toon crew, The Looney Tunes.Along with Tom & Jerry, and the rights to Hanna-Barbera's line of animated properties, Warners also has big-screen adaptations in development featuring "The Jetsons" and "Yogi Bear".Time and box office revenue will tell if these are good ideas after all. I don't have my fingers crossed though.

More Martin Tom & Jerry

Here's another example of Oscar Martin's Tom & Jerry with translation by Christopher Signore.
I wonder if we'll be seeing any of these T&J stories in collected volumes over here in North America anytime in the future? Great artwork and stories!

Translated Tom & Jerry Strips

Cartoonist Oscar Martin received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Warner Bros in 2002 for his career as scriptwriter and cartoonist of the Tom & Jerry comics.
His work has been published in numerous countries in various languages. Martin's art and stories were available in North America for a brief time when Harvey Comics was publishing a T&J title in the early '90s.
Earlier posts of Oscar Martin's T&J work can be seen here and here.
Thanks to my online friend Christopher Signore who owns some French issues of Martin's Tom & Jerry comics, Chris took the time to translate and scan some strips for our reading pleasure. Be sure to check out Chris' artwork on his personal website!

H-B Mini Books

Cartoon historian, Jerry Beck, has teamed up with Insight Editions to bring Hanna-Barbera fans a line of mini books that touch upon 3 H-B classic series.
http://insighteditions.com/product_info
Tom & Jerry, The Flintstones and Scooby-Doo are presented in 4", 48 page, hardcover books that cover the history of each Hanna Barbera shows.Hopefully Mr. Beck will be writing more minis on other H-B properties. These are quite affordable and informative.

More Oscar Martin Tom & Jerry

Back in June, I made a post about Harvey Comic's Tom & Jerry comic that featured great artwork from Spain cartoonist Oscar Martin.
http://jedaniels-adventures.blogspot.com/2008/06
Oscar was pleased that I mentioned his artwork in my last post, so why not include another great Tom & Jerry story? This story was originally published in North America back in a 1992 issue of Harvey Classics' Tom & Jerry and Friends. As you animation fans may have noticed, this story is a tribute to Tex Avery's Wolf & Red cartoons. There is even a little "Thanks Tex" in the last panel.
Oscar Martin has been illustrating Tom & Jerry stories since the 1980's among other famous cartoon characters. He has even launched a new website to showcase his career and work.
Check out the link for more great Oscar Martin artwork!

T&J Tales Volume 6

The remaining 5 episodes (15 cartoons) of the 2005 Warner Bros. Animation series will be hitting DVD on Feb. 3rd!
http://tvshowsondvd.com/news/Tom-Jerry-Tales-Volume-6/10667I'm a fan of Spike Brandt & Tony Cervone but I'm unsure which cartoons they directed this time around. From what I've read, "Kitty Cat Blues" features a retro design that gives a 1940's look to the characters. I'm interested to see how that looks.
I wonder what a cartoon featuring the 1960's Gene Deitch's or Chuck Jones' designs would have looked like?

Oscar Martin's Tom & Jerry

During the early 90's Harvey Comics decided to get the rights to some classic cartoon characters to get more mainstream with comic collectors.
Harvey started to print their own Tom & Jerry title with stories that were originally created overseas. Artist and writer Oscar Martin really captures the classic design and slapstick humor of these characters. Fortunately enough he was working with Tom & Jerry since the early 80's!If you wish to learn more and see more of Oscar Martin's artwork and stories, follow the link to his online portfolio!
