FUTURAMA Hits The Century Mark! 100 Episodes And Still Going Strong!

Source: Comedy Central

Leela leads an army of underground mutants in a revolt against the surface people in the milestone 100th episode of "Futurama," premiering Thursday, September 2 at 10:00 p.m. on COMEDY CENTRAL. This sixth season finale episode brings to a close a record-breaking premiere run of the resurrected series on COMEDY CENTRAL.

In this landmark episode, titled "The Mutants are Revolting," the Planet Express Crew has been hired to make their 100th delivery and Bender begins planning the party of the millennium. Meanwhile, however, the rest of the crew attends a fundraiser where Fry accidentally outs Leela as a mutant who is illegally living above ground. For that, she is banished to the sewers where her fellow mutants reside in futuristic squalor. Feeling guilty about his slip-up, Fry and the rest of the gang – along with the mutated members of Devo – join Leela in an epic mutant revolution against the surface dwellers.

After almost seven years since the last original episode aired, the sixth season premiere of "Futurama" in June led COMEDY CENTRAL to its best Thursday prime ever among young men. Since then, the animated sci-fi comedy has continued its out-of-this-world winning streak, with a season-to-date average of 2.5 million viewers each week, a 1.56 P18-49 rating, a 3.02 M18-34 rating and 3.26 M18-24 rating. In the social media realm, the "Futurama" Facebook fan base recently reached a milestone by crossing the 4 million mark.

"Futurama" follows the life of Philip J. Fry (Billy West), a pizza delivery boy who accidentally stumbles into a freezer on December 31, 1999 and wakes up a thousand years later. In his future home of New New York City, Fry goes to work for the Planet Express Intergalactic delivery company, where he befriends Bender (John DiMaggio), a booze-fueled robot and sets his romantic sights on Leela (Katey Sagal), a sexy cyclops who enjoys beating him up.

Steven Spielberg Heads Down Under To Shoot TERRA NOVA

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: WENN

Last February Fox had announced that they had acquired the rights to the prehistoric adventure television series "Terra Nova" from writers Craig Silverstein and Kelly Marcel after the duo had failed to sell the series in the UK and to CBS. Apparently the network was so enamoured with the idea of a 'time travel' show that featured dinosaurs that that they quite literally snatched the program up before the rival network could even begin negotiations, and immediately hired Steven Spielberg and Peter Chernin to develop it.

Since that time Spielberg and company have been busy putting all the pieces together to start work on the series, and now Fox has announced that the production team is gearing up to head to south-east Queensland in Australia to begin shooting.

Jim Sharp, the vice president of production at Fox,explains, "Queensland had the right look, climate and terrain, a vibrant production community and attractive economic incentives. We are very excited to be shooting our first production there."

It is quite obvious that the remote areas of Australia would be ideal for a location shoot of this type for two reasons. One, the area is already 'primeval' enough on it's own, virtually untouched by man, and two, filming in Australia is way cheaper than filming in either the United States or Canada. With the estimated budget for the show already weighing in at a hefty $4-million-per-episode, any cost cutting move would be more than welcome I'm sure.

Reportedly "Terra Nova," will follow the exploits of a family from 100 years in the future, that travels back in time to the age of dinosaurs.

Think of it as a modern "Land of the Lost" or "Valley of the Dinosaurs".

Rumor has it that actor Jason O'Mara ("Life on Mars", "Grey's Anatomy") has been cast as the shows lead.

Rodriguez Confirms PREDATORS Sequel Is On The Way

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: Obsessed With Film

It wasn't too long ago that only huge Hollywood blockbusters warranted sequels, now it seems that moderately successful ones do as well.

Robert Rodriguez's monster reboot "Predators" hasn't done too bad at the box office, $46 million so far, then again it didn't reach the much coveted $100 million plateau in it's opening weekend either.

So, one might wonder why Fox would be so inclined to shell out more money for a "Predators" sequel based on such average numbers? The answer is simple. True Rodriguez's film didn't blow people away, but it did turn a profit, making more than it's scaled back $35 million budget in returns.

So, Fox is very willing to see if yet another Predator film would be able to generate a profit from a relatively small investment, in Hollywood movie terms.

Rodriguez explains, “(FOX) said, ‘Let’s do some other ones. What other story ideas do you have?

Because it was like, let’s test out the market with this one. They really wanted it to be pretty contained, pretty scaled-back. They didn’t want to put too many of the ideas into it that we could save for a second one. So we could see what the appetite was, because the bigger movie would actually be what comes following that. That kind of sets up a new storyline, new location and world, and then you can really go crazy from there.”

Though the director is optimistic that he will be given a bigger budget for a bigger film this time, I wouldn't bet on it myself. Fox learned long ago, with the "Planet of the Apes" movies, that once you have a successful movie series, with an iconic character, a huge profit can be generated by a film with a low-budget. In other words, fans will pay to see the product, whether you sink a lot of money into it or not.

Hopefully the film maker is right, and the studio will be more inclined to go with a larger scale production next time around. I think that the fans would rather see a really hard-core sci fi action film than a watered down one

Harry Potter Star Felton Cast In RISE OF THE APES

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Sources: Hollywood News / Backstage.com

With production set to begin any day now in Vancouver, the cast of the "Planet of the Apes" prequel, "Rise of the Apes", is starting to take shape.

On Wednesday veteran character actor Brian Cox joined the production and now Fox has announced that Tom Felton has been cast .

According to sources, Felton, who is best known for his role as Draco Malfoy in the "Harry Potter" film series, will play the son of Cox's evil primate sanctuary owner.

As reported in earlier articles, "Rise of the Apes" boasts a rather interesting cast including Freida Pinto, James Franco, John Lithgow and Andy Serkis, who will once again be used as a model for a CGI rendered character, Caesar, the leader of the apes uprising against humanity.

Based loosely on the 1972 movie "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes", "Rise" is a "prequel to the 'Planet of the Apes' movies, set in the present day, which tells the story of the genetic experiments that led to apes developing human-like intelligence, and the beginning of the end of the era of man."

“Rise of the Apes” is slated to be released in theaters on June 24, 2011.

Brian Cox To Be The Bad Guy In RISE OF THE APES

The cast for the upcoming "Planet of the Apes" reboot, "Rise of the Apes" is becoming wider in scope, and in depth, with the addition of veteran character actor Brian Cox (X2, The Bourne Identity) as the film's prime antagonist.

According to sources, Cox's character is, "the villainous owner of a primate sanctuary who runs the facility without compassion for the animals that live there."

You can bet dollars to donuts that it will this meanie who will play a major role in persuading Caesar to unite his brothers in a revolt to destroy mankind.

Filming on "Rise of the Apes" is set to begin filming any day now under the direction of Rupert Wyatt.

Cox joins an already talented cast that includes Freida Pinto, James Franco and John Lithgow.

Interestingly enough, "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes", which will serve as the inspiration for "Rise of the Apes", was filmed just down the street from my home at UC Irvine. The university stood in for the futuristic city where the apes were forced into slavery.

Meet The (New) PREDATORS

Source: 20th Century Fox (Press Material)

Having lined up an impressive (human) cast, it fell to the filmmakers of @0th Century Fox's, "Predators", to make their other-worldly "stars" worthy of the legacy of the original film. "I believe what really made 'Predator' great was that the human characters went hand-in-hand with the alien Predator, because they are the audience's entry point to the movie," comments director Robert Rodriguez. "They have to identify with the human characters enough so that if the humans show fear then they would show fear against what they're seeing. So, we really had to nail the human characters in order to make the Predator character actually stronger. One without the other doesn't work. So, we really concentrated on not just having human characters that were great, but then making our Predators actually also have terrific and distinct personalities so that they weren't just the 'others.' They are actually characters in their own right."

While the human stars bonded during the early weeks of shooting in Hawaii, the cast of Predators and other creatures were prepared by an extensive team of artists and technicians for shooting in Austin. Longtime Rodriguez collaborators Greg Nicotero and his partner Howard Berger, partners in KNB Effects Group, Inc. - were charged with creating the alien creatures and the special make-up effects. "This is a really exciting show for us. We're actually creating the title characters of the film, and multiples of them," comments Nicotero.

The surviving humans make the stunning discovery that the "original" Predator has fallen victim to this new "upgrade," whom they realize is out to be the supreme hunter... and the ultimate Predator. So, in addition to bringing back the affectionately-called "Classic" Predator, KNB created three new Berserker Predators - Dog Handler, Falconer, and Mr. Black. These represent bigger, longer, leaner, and deadlier versions of the species that audiences remember from previous films. Other creatures that expand the Predators mythology - including the alien Ram Runner and the Predators' Hunting Dogs - were also devised.

Rodney J. Brunet, Chris Olivia, and Alex Toader of Troublemaker Digital (TMS Digital), plus conceptual artist Joe Pepe, began early drawings that were fine-tuned by the designers at KNB. A team of sixty-two people at KNB - designers, artists, sculptors, mold-makers, and painters - worked for approximately 13 weeks at their 25,000 square foot facility in Los Angeles.

"Every single one of those people were 100% dedicated to bringing the best possible creatures to life," states Nicotero. "Shannon Shea, who was basically my lieutenant on this movie, had worked at Stan Winston's company on the original 'Predator,' so he was really invested in this project." (Shea and property master Tommy "Tom" Tomlinson were the two "legacy" crew members, who had also worked on the original film in 1987.)

"The time frame was pretty insane if you really think about the level of work," explains Nicotero. "Every single piece of about sixteen total creatures (including doubles) had to be created from scratch. Every single dreadlock, piece of jewelry, mandible... every single element of these creatures had to designed and manufactured and fit together."

The classic and new Predators are humanoid aliens who were created largely by practical state-of-the-art creature suits. "Being able to see the original Predator in our story had a nostalgia factor, because you hadn't really seen him like that since the first movie," comments Rodriguez. "We just wanted it to feel like it evolved - to bring back the original, plus a new updated, nastier, meaner breed."

"Robert and Nimrod were really specific about our Classic Predator being the 'cassette tape' version and the new Predator being the iPod version, so [the latter] needed to be sleek and elegant and fierce," comments Nicotero. "So instantly I had ideas of bringing the armor closer to the body and sweeping the dreadlocks back and elongating the head a little bit so that it wasn't quite as square-looking. It's not always 'bigger is better'; the new Predators are elegant-looking because they're tall, long, and lean."

Nicotero elaborates about the features of the new creatures: "We see their masks for most of the film and they have a lot of personality. The Dog Handler had tusks that he had taken off of one of the hunting dogs, The Falconer had a very specific mask design, and then Mr. Black had this weird alien jaw. Each has a unique personality. In addition, we also painted them a little differently so that they would stand out and you'd be able to visually differentiate between the different Predators." All the Predators feature the cloaking ability established in the first film, but the new ones also have high tech weaponry, including an airborne Predator Falcon and new Plasma Caster.

While many of the Predator effects were practical, the film's visual effects team provided key enhancements, including muzzle flashes, set extensions, a digital space ship, elements of the opening freefall and parachute sequence, as well as the iconic cloaking effects. "We're taking a new riff on the cloaking - we've made it a digital effect and it's more pristine than it was in the original film," says on-set visual effects supervisor Jabbar Raisani. "It's as if their technology's been updated now in the future. So it's a more invisible effect in this film."

In the Predator universe, timing is everything - especially the creatures' first appearance in each story. "In the original film, I think the way the Predator is revealed was such a success because they took their time and they made a meal out of it," comments Antal. "The terror was supported by the slow burn of the Predators' reveal. It was something that you hadn't quite seen. You don't see the Predator for the first half hour. In this film, we've tried to replicate that slow reveal."

Because the Predator characters would be performing stunts, Nicotero worked with stunt coordinator Jeff Dashnaw to cast the performers who would wear the Predator suits. Dashnaw also gave Nicotero some feedback on the designs to keep the performers safe. "The plasma gun and blades and such stick out from the suits, which could be dangerous during the fight performances," says Dashnaw. "So, Greg designed them so they could come off the suits when necessary and visual effects adds them back in during post."

Six-foot-five Derek Mears, who portrayed iconic screen monster Jason Voorhees in last year's hit "Friday the 13th" reboot, plays the Classic Predator, and Brian Steele and Carey Jones portray the three new Predators.

Andy Serkis To Play Caesar In RISE OF THE APES

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: WENN

Actor Andy Serkis, who has the pleasure of playing both King Kong and Gollum, will now have the chance to play another of cinema's greatest simians, Caesar, from the "Planet of the Apes."

Indeed, the performer who has the uncanny ability to mimic animal movements, has been cast as the leader of an ape rebellion over mankind in 20th Century Fox's reboot of the popular "Apes" franchise entitled, "Rise of the Apes."

Though many news outlets are reporting that Serkis will be donning an ape costume and makeup similar to the kind made famous by John Chambers in the 1960s and 70s, it is safe to assume from the reports that have surfaced that the actor will once again be used as a model for a CGI character.

Of course, the fact that Peter Jackson's effects house, WETA Digital, has been hired to work on the film's effects probably is a dead giveaway here.

Not much is known about the film as of yet, but early reports stated that the film would center around the genetic engineering of apes to be used as slaves for mankind, similar to the plot of "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes". As can be expected, these intelligent primates soon get sick of being treated like animals and join forces to turn the tables on us human types.

"Rise of the Apes" is set to begin filming next month in San Francisco under the direction of Rupert Wyatt. Other cast members include Slumdog Millionaire star Freida Pinto, James Franco and John Lithgow.

Only 2 More Days Until The Premiere Of FUTURAMA On Comedy Central!

I know you can't wait and neither can I!

Here is a synopsis of the premiere episodes "Rebirth" & "In-A-Gadda-Da-Leela":

After a devastating spaceship crash, the Professor attempts to resuscitate the crew with his birth machine. Later, Leela and Zapp Brannigan find themselves stranded on an Eden-like planet.

Hatched from the mind of The Simpsons creator Matt Groening, Futurama blasts contemporary culture and science fiction alike with an animated comedy barrage. Hapless NYC pizza guy Philip J. Fry makes a fateful delivery to a cryonics lab on New Year's Eve, 1999 when he's accidentally flash-frozen until the next millennium. Reawakened in 31st century New New York, he finds work at his great-great-etc. grandnephew's Planet Express delivery service. Together with his hedonist robot buddy bender and cyclopsian love interest Leela, Fry travels to the farthest reaches of the universe. Along the way they discover strange alien life forms, velour-clad lotharios, freaky mutants, intergalactic conspiracies and the disembodied heads of celebrities throughout the ages.

Both "Rebirth" and "In-A-Gadda-Da-Leela" will air on Thursday night, but if for some reason you miss them, or ya just gotta watch them over-and-over, Comedy Central will be re airing them over the next week starting Friday.

The Triumphant Return Of FUTURAMA - New Images!

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: Comedy Central

It has been a long road back for the popular animated sci fi/comedy, "Futurama", which initially aired on the Fox network from 1999 to 2003.

After the network cancelled the program due to low ratings it got a second chance through syndication on Cartoon Network, and then, Comedy Central, where, like "Star Trek" and "Family Guy" before it, the series gained new fans.

Realizing that they had a potential hit on their hands, spawned by high ratings and the success of the direct-to-DVD releases, "Bender's Big Score," "The Beast with a Billion Backs," "Bender's Game" and "Into the Wild Green Yonder," Comedy Central struck a deal with 20th Century Fox Television in 2009 to produce 26 new episodes.

That deal almost fell apart due to a contract dispute between the network and voice actors, Billy West, Katey Sagal, John DiMaggio, Maurice LaMarche and Tress MacNeille soon after it was announced. Frustrated over being offered much reduced salaries, the actors boycotted a planned presentation at the San Diego Comic Con to announce the new series. As a response to the 'no-show', Fox then put out a casting call for replacement actors. A few days later, both sides caved in, and an agreement was reached that would benenfit both parties.

The show was back on!

On June 24th the first of these new episodes, "Rebirth", is scheduled to air on Comedy Central, and if what we have seen in the previews is any indication of what's to come, "Futurama" is in for a much longer run on the network.

It is if show hasn't missed a beat in the seven years since it has been off the air.

Here is the skinny from Comedy Central:

As the season continues, the site will be home to exclusive interviews with the show's cast, as well as with Matt Groening and David X. Cohen. Additionally, there will be a weekly Facebook quiz based on the most recent episode. Users can then share their quiz results with their friends.

"Futurama," created by Matt Groening and developed by Groening and David X. Cohen, is produced by Twentieth Century Fox Television, with multi-Emmy® Award-winning Rough Draft Studios, Inc. contributing the animation.

Characters:

Fry

A delivery boy with no future, Fry was accidentally frozen on December 31st, 1999 when a pizza delivery went horribly awry. He awoke a thousand years later to find himself in New New York City, a wonderland of robots, aliens, stars, moons and clovers. Fry soon went to work at the Planet Express delivery company, run by his great-great-great...great-great-nephew, Hubert Farnsworth. With his best friend Bender and off-again, off-again girlfriend Leela, he travels the universe, boldly going where no pizza boy has gone before.

Bender

Built to bend girders, Bender was fed up with his career and began a new life as part of the Planet Express delivery crew, along with his best friend, Fry. In his free time, he enjoys gambling, cooking, stealing, folk singing, bending, computer dating and dating computers.

Leela

Leela is a sexy cyclops whose character, intelligence and willingness to clobber opponents make her a natural leader. Leela is adept at avoiding the clumsy romantic advances of her co-worker, Fry.

Four Brand New Images From FUTURAMA!

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Sources: The Hollywood Reporter / Comedy Central

Just wanted to post a quick note about these four new photos from the upcoming season of "Futurama" on Comedy Central.

One shows the Planet Express Ship under construction. It's a homage to the early images from J.J. Abrams "Star Trek" film that showed the Enterprise under construction.

The second shows Fry, Amy, Bender, and the gang as bunch of wackos on a street corner with "Domesday" signs.

The third shows Bender doing his best Tony Manero impression from "Saturday Night Fever".

The fourth shows Leela and Zapp Brannigan as Adam and Eve.

Hey, a little skin never hurts a shows ratings.

Hard to tell what all this means yet, but you can bet it will be funnier than hell.

Here's the skinny:
