Ryan Gosling To Play Logan 5

Written By: Ken Hulsey

Variety is reporting that the Ryan Gosling (The Notebook, Fracture) is in negotiations to step into the shoes of fellow British thespian Michael York to play Logan 5 in the upcoming "Logan's Run" remake.

Reportedly Warner Bros is also in negotiations with Nicolas Winding Refn to direct the film which has been various stages of development for over a decade. Refn would join a long list of film makers that have been attached to "Logan's Run" throughout the years, a list that also includes Carl Erik Rinsch and Bryan Singer.

Producers Joel Silver, Andrew Rona, Akiva Goldsman and Kerry Foster have already been in place for some time.

Last year Silver revealed that "Logan's Run" was going to be produced in 3D, which should come as no surprise to anyone due to the fact that just about all upcoming fantasy film projects are slated to be produced in that format.

Logan's Run Plot:

In the distant future the survivors of the apocalypse live in a giant domed city where their every need is taken care of by overlord computer. People live in world of pleasure, but there is one catch. At the age of 30 (21 in Johnson and Nolan's novel) all citizens are required to report for a ritualistic murder ceremony known as "Carousel". The populace has been fooled into believing that this ceremony leads to reincarnation and a new life though its real purpose is population control. To insure that citizens don't "chicken out" on their way to Carousel there is a police force in place known as "Sandman" who terminate those who attempt to run.

Logan 5 is one of the elite Sandmen. During one of his routine terminations he retrieves an anch, a symbol for a mythical place called Sanctuary where runners can find refuge, off the body of a would be runner. Upon placing the item into the computers scanner he is instructed to undergo a process to alter his "Life Clock", a symbol of a persons age embedded in the palm, to the blinking red of a person on last day so that he may pose as a runner to infiltrate Sanctuary. During the process he learns that 1036 runners had managed to escape the city and that Carousel is a ruse.

Along with his companion, Jessica 6, Logan attempts to flee the domed city in search of Sanctuary.

Let's see if Logan really gets running this time.

Two Godzillas? Rubbish!

by Armand Vaquer

There's an article that appeared in the Pittsburgh Film Industry Examiner website alleging that there may be two Godzilla movies in 2012, one from Toho and the other from Legendary Pictures/Warner Brothers.

This article came to me last night courtesy of Google.

It was written by Fiore Mastracci and it contains so many factual errors that I was just going to ignore it and not post anything here about it. I did post the link to a couple of Godzilla fan forums and the reaction was predictable: universally panned.

The article claimed that Toho "announced" their plan to end Godzilla's "forced retirement" early (i.e., 2012). There's been no such announcement, otherwise we'd have been discussing it for months. Believe me, if there were such an announcement, fans would have been on top of it immediately.

Toho and Legendary Pictures came to an agreement on a new American Godzilla film last year (they had been in negotiations at least since 2009), so Toho wouldn't even consider undercutting the American production with a movie of their own. It doesn't make any business or logical sense.

I am pretty close to some of the Toho executives, and none have given any indication of such a planned Japanese return of the Big G. A fan posted a comment on Mastracci's article asking for the source of this. It will be interesting to see Mastracci's reply.

He even got the good and bad guys wrong in Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001).

Mastracci seems to be a nice guy, but, unfortunately, his article is just erroneous.

Sorry, folks, there's nothing to see here. But if you insist, to read the article, go here.

Gareth Edwards To Direct Legendary's Godzilla

Legendary's "Godzilla" now has a director, according to The Hollywood Reporter:

Godzilla has a director.

Gareth Edwards, the British filmmaker who wrote and directed indie sci-fi movie Monsters, is closing a deal to develop and direct the creature feature for Legendary Pictures, the company that co-produced blockbusters such as Inception and The Dark Knight.

Warner Bros. will co-produce, co-finance and distribute per its deal with Legendary. Legendary's Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni are producing along with Dan Lin, Roy Lee, and Brian Rogers.

Yogi Bear (2010)(Warner Bros)

Source: Warner Bros

Everyone's favorite pic-a-nic basket-stealing bear comes to the big screen in "Yogi Bear," a new adventure, filmed in 3D, that combines live action with computer animation.

Dan Aykroyd stars as the voice of Yogi, Jellystone Park's notorious troublemaker, and Justin Timberlake as the voice of Boo Boo, Yogi's faithful pal and co-conspirator in his never-ending schemes to separate park visitors from their lunches.

Yogi has always relied on his quick wit and fast feet to stay one step ahead of irate campers while dodging his long-suffering nemesis, Ranger Smith. But he and Boo Boo are about to face a situation worse than anything Yogi has ever gotten them into...

Jellystone Park is being sold!

To cover his mismanagement of city funds and fuel his election campaign, Mayor Brown plans to sell the park to loggers. Families will no longer be able to experience the natural beauty of the outdoors Jellystone has always provided--and, even worse, Yogi, Boo Boo, and all their friends will be tossed out of the only home they've ever known. Faced with his biggest challenge ever, Yogi must prove he really is "smarter than the average bear," as he and Boo Boo join forces with Ranger Smith to find a way to save the park from closing forever.

Leading the film's live-action cast are Anna Faris as visiting nature documentary filmmaker Rachel Johnson; Tom Cavanagh as the diligent Ranger Smith; T.J. Miller as Smith's over-enthusiastic deputy, Ranger Jones; Andrew Daly as the conniving Mayor Brown; and Nate Corddry following behind as Brown's Chief of Staff.

For people the world over, the name Yogi Bear sparks the distinctive image of a certain pear-shaped gourmand in a jaunty hat and tie--a lovably larcenous pie-eating rebel who believed he was smarter than the average bear, and whose outrageous antics put Jellystone Park on the cartoon map of the world.

Speaking with affection about the "star" of his new film, director Eric Brevig says, "I've always loved Yogi. He does things his own way. He means well, but he just can't stop listening to his stomach, and those impulses that tell him if he grabs a pie off that table fast enough maybe he'll get away with it. He's like a big kid, and I think he represents that part of all of us. He may be a bear, but so much of what he does is pure human nature."

"People smile when they think of Yogi," says Donald De Line, who, with Karen Rosenfelt, produced "Yogi Bear," the beloved bruin's biggest big-screen adventure. "He's such a timeless character. I can hear his voice in my head the instant I think of him."

"The original cartoon was written as much for adults as for children to enjoy, and I'm happy to continue that with a big, fun, family film I believe parents will be able to share with their kids and feel that there's something there for them, too," Brevig adds.

"Yogi Bear" updates the classic property by respecting those elements that make it timeless--the personalities, irreverent humor and Yogi's endless conflict with authority--while introducing a contemporary tone and storyline. "We took care to avoid things that would identify a time period," Brevig states. "There's modern clothing and cars, but you won't see Yogi using any electronic devices that would date it. I think kids meeting Yogi for the first time will just see him as an awesome, crazy bear who builds airplanes out of campsite junk, while others can reconnect with characters they know and love."

The multi-generational appeal of this larger-than-life wiseacre and his easygoing bow-tied sidekick, Boo Boo, was brought home to the filmmakers in a big way by the two actors who offered their vocal talents for the pair: Dan Aykroyd, who lent his booming baritone to Yogi, and Justin Timberlake, with his spot-on characterization of Boo Boo.

Aykroyd fondly recalls his introduction to the character. "Every Wednesday afternoon, after school, my joy was to sit and watch 'Yogi Bear,'" he says. "Of all the cartoon characters, he was the most accessible--the warmest and the happiest. He was also a bit of an outlaw, which I liked. His friendship with Boo Boo was perfect, not a trace of meanness in either of them, and I think that's why kids of Justin's generation, and now, still embrace them."

Echoing that experience, Timberlake says, "Back when I was in school, I'd procrastinate doing my homework by watching cartoons, and 'Yogi Bear' was one of the staples of after-school television and Saturday mornings. Later, I found out that my parents grew up with it, too. Watching it makes me feel like a kid again."

Yogi and Boo Boo exist as fully animated CG characters and interact with a human cast in the largely live-action movie. The intention, Brevig offers, was to present "a Yogi and Boo Boo who appear almost as physically real as the actors, with twinkling eyes and wet noses and all the warmth and subtleties, rather than as mere cartoon images. Our cinematographer, Peter James, lit them as he lit all the actors. I wanted them to be living, breathing, fully dimensional beings."

Shot entirely in 3D with the latest generation of stereo photography, which Brevig calls "the ultimate system," "Yogi Bear" delivers this blend of elements in a way, the director declares, "audiences have not seen before. This level of technology didn't exist a year ago. The resolution, crispness and detail we can capture with the new 3D cameras is excellent. We took this camera system into places it has never been: into the treetops and down white water rapids. We flew it from a construction crane 200 feet above the forest to get Yogi's point of view from his makeshift glider as he swoops down to grab a picnic basket, and everyone comes along for the ride.

"I won't say it was easy," he adds. "It's an 80-pound rig because it's really two cameras--a right and a left. The camera crew is probably still nursing their aching backs."

"The technique has gotten so sophisticated and refined, we thought, 'Let's take all the visual opportunities this story offers--the action and the comedy, this beautiful setting with all its depth and huge vistas--and take it up a notch. Make people feel as though they're really inside Jellystone Park,'" says De Line.

Brevig, who made his feature directorial debut with the 2008 hit family adventure "Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D," has a wealth of experience in visual effects, working for the past 20 years alongside some of the most influential filmmakers in the industry and earning, among other honors, a Special Achievement Oscar® for his artistry on "Total Recall." Working in 3D is second nature to him. Still, he emphasizes, "We never want the technology to get in the way. What matters is making these characters real and engaging, and telling a story."

And the stakes have never been higher for Yogi and Boo Boo. It's more than Yogi's latest pic-a-nic basket caper that's giving Ranger Smith a headache: it's the fate of the park itself. Corrupt Mayor Brown has been squandering the city's cash and now plans to cover his financial indiscretions and bankroll his bid for the governor's office by selling Jellystone to loggers for a nice fat check. This means foreclosing on Yogi and Boo Boo's "Cave, Sweet Cave" and displacing all their animal friends, not to mention Ranger Smith, while depriving local families of the unspoiled beauty the park provides.

It's enough to make a bear lose his appetite. For a minute.

The good news is that saving Jellystone Park will showcase every bit of Yogi's bold inventiveness, style and derring-do, not to mention a healthy dose of self-promotion, as well as Boo Boo's characteristic charm, good humor and keen eye for damage control. Together they will face this new challenge like they live every day of their lives: as a team.

So important is their mission that Yogi and Boo Boo will join forces with the one man they've always done their best to avoid: Ranger Smith, played by Tom Cavanagh. Also offering help is a new character, documentary filmmaker Rachel Johnson, played by Anna Faris, who comes to Jellystone on assignment and finds herself enchanted by the park...and, even more, by Ranger Smith. Meanwhile, Smith's deputy, Ranger Jones, played by T.J. Miller, provides more hindrance than help, as the Mayor and his Chief of Staff, played by Andrew Daly and Nate Corddry, move forward with their despicable plan.

"What I've always liked about Yogi is that he's both a physical and poetic comedian, which makes him perfect for movie stardom," says Brad Copeland, one of the "Yogi Bear" screenwriters and another longtime fan. "He can be funny whether smacking into a tree or delivering a punch line."

"Yogi Bear," the movie, gives him ample opportunity for both.

Yogi Bear and Boo Boo made their first appearance on the small screen in 1958 as part of Hanna-Barbera's "The Huckleberry Hound Show," the first cartoon series ever to earn an Emmy Award for Distinguished Children's Programming. The pair's popularity soon launched their own spin-off show, in 1961, followed by a nationally syndicated comic strip and, in 1964, their big-screen debut. In the ensuing years, the carefree mooch and his sweet-natured pal have been spotted in numerous series, specials, movies and DVD collections.

Throughout, one theme has remained constant: friendship. No matter what's at stake or whether or not Yogi's latest contraption will crash-land the two of them through the roof of the ranger station, at the heart of every "Yogi Bear" tale is the abiding camaraderie and comedic interplay between Yogi and Boo Boo. And their latest adventure is no exception.

"It's about loyalty. In the end, your friends are your friends and you gotta stand by them," says Aykroyd.

"Their dynamic is wonderful to watch," Brevig says. "Yogi always convinces Boo Boo that his latest and greatest plan is going to work, never mind that it never does. And Boo Boo is the devoted friend who's always there for his big buddy. He often tries to suggest a more sensible route--to no avail--and he usually gets the worst of the deal when things fall apart, but he still hangs in there."

As many savvy viewers have come to understand, Boo Boo may really be the one who's smarter than the average bear, though it's a point he would never dream of pressing.

"Boo Boo is definitely Yogi's conscience," Timberlake notes. "He's the good angel on Yogi's shoulder, always there to remind him of what's important. But even as he's the voice of reason, he does it all while being a cute little bear with a nasal-y voice."

"Yogi makes every crazy idea sound so attractive because of his enthusiasm, that Boo Boo always ends up going along with it, no matter how dangerous or ill-advised," says Aykroyd, who laughingly cites a prime example: "One of my favorite scenes is Yogi up on a cliff, hooking himself up to a zip line. He actually thinks he has accurately targeted a picnic basket, and you know that's not going to happen..."

But what Yogi lacks in engineering acumen, he makes up for in charisma. He may be a tad vain, impulsive and sticky-fingered, but we love him because he's also decent, kindhearted and endlessly optimistic.

"Yogi's charm stems from his basic civility. He may be a thief but he's a very courteous thief and that's why no one, not even Ranger Smith, can truly hold it against him. His positive attitude and can-do spirit is infectious," says Jeffrey Ventimilia, who, with writing partner Joshua Sternin, shares screenwriting credit on "Yogi Bear."

"There's also a subtle subversiveness to Yogi that I think is part of his appeal to adults," Sternin adds. "While the rest of us have to live by society's rules, he has an admirable sense of freedom. He lives by his own rules, acting in the moment."

Aykroyd, who jokes that he and his character share "the Yogi Bear appetite," attributes his Yogi-channeling ability to "just having him in my head from watching the show so many times."

"He does it in a very classic way but also puts a little Dan Aykroyd spin on it, so it's familiar but with a little something that makes it fresh," says De Line.

Recalling his meeting with the actor, Brevig adds, "I can't say we found our Yogi Bear because our Yogi found us. He started reading lines and if you were looking at him, you'd think, 'That's Dan,' but if you turned away, you'd think, 'That's Yogi.'"

The filmmakers were also delighted with Timberlake's take on Boo Boo. "Donald, Karen and I met with him," Brevig recounts. "We all know he's a multi-talent, an impressive actor with a great voice, but would this be in his skill set? People think they can do Boo Boo but it's not easy. As we were talking, he casually dropped into character and we just stopped and looked at each other. He was fantastic.'"

Timberlake, whose film credits include a starring role as the voice of Artie in the 2007 blockbuster hit "Shrek the Third," says, "I always used to walk around the house imitating all kinds of cartoon voices. I would mimic everything, and so I was happy to give Boo Boo a try."

"Like Dan, Justin has real gift for comedy," says De Line. "They played around with the dialogue at their initial meeting and right away they hit all the beats and had a good time with it."

Fortunately, their schedules lined up such that the actors were able to work together in the same space, an uncommon occurrence in the animation world, where isolated solo recordings are the norm. That not only facilitated a genuine rapport between the leads, but a fair amount of ad-libbing as well.

"I think it made a difference to the performances because Yogi and Boo Boo work so well as a left and right hand. I consider them a classic team like Abbott and Costello or Laurel and Hardy," says Timberlake. "Dan had the perfect energy and working together created the opportunity for us to improv a bit."

Aykroyd concurs, adding, "Whenever you have artists collaborating there's going to be some improvisation, you're going to go off on riffs. There were a lot of moments when we made stuff up on the spot. It was wonderful to have the opportunity to play off each other, and to chuckle about how funny it was to be there, in our adult lives, playing these characters that we loved as children."

Brevig banked preliminary voice recordings for the animators' reference before beginning the live-action portion of the project. Meanwhile, on the Jellystone Park set in New Zealand, the live-action stars began playing to an imaginary Yogi and Boo Boo.

"When you have a big CG character interacting with actors it requires a lot of planning, but you also have to think on your feet," says Rhythm & Hues animation supervisor Joe Ksander ("Night at the Museum"), whose on-set work included providing eye-line references and guiding the stand-ins. Ksander and animation supervisor Alex Orrelle ("The Incredibles") worked in tandem with Brevig and Rhythm & Hues' visual effects supervisor Betsy Paterson ("The Incredible Hulk") as part of a team numbering approximately 450 at its peak, keeping pace with one another between Los Angeles and New Zealand via Cinesync and Skype.

Pre-filming run-throughs gave the actors an idea of what their animated colleagues would be up to at any given moment, and provided Brevig and the animators additional ideas for actions and reactions. Says Orrelle, "It was a very collaborative environment. You never know where a great idea will come from, and Eric was always flexible."

As scenes were shot, simple cartoon versions of Yogi and Boo Boo were digitally drawn into the footage to provide a guide for the CG animators, "based on cues from the director as to the intent of each sequence and what Yogi and Boo Boo would be feeling," he adds.

The edited footage was then screened for Aykroyd and Timberlake. At that point, "It was like video-game versions of the characters so the actors could see if they were standing, running for a train or hanging on the edge of a cliff," Brevig explains. "I told them, 'This is my best guess of what you're going to do. Your performances are now going to tell us how to change the animation.'"

It wasn't until after the two completed their scenes that their characters really began to come alive, calibrated by the animators to the pacing and nuance of the vocal and physical performances--quizzical where they were quizzical, hushed where they hushed, and exuberant where they were exuberant. Yogi and Boo Boo became increasingly more refined and integrated with their human co-stars, ultimately acquiring the emotion as well as the textures, colors and natural movements seen on screen.

Ksander acknowledges that filming in 3D "means we can't cheat. We have to be more careful about exactly where the bears are. If they need to be a certain size that meant, on set, we'd have to work closely with the camera crew and the actors to be sure that the bears no one can actually see are in the right place."

Production was planned so that Brevig was able to edit and oversee the computer animation and effects in their post-production phases while concurrently shooting live-action sequences with the actors in New Zealand, a process he jokingly likens to "laying track as the train is coming."

The Deathly Hallows of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1"

Source: Warner Bros

Narrowly escaping back to the forest, Harry and Hermione are soon reunited with Ron, who turns up just in time to save Harry from a cold, watery grave. "It's really Ron's big moment," Grint says. "He steps up and becomes the hero by believing what's in his heart and not what's in front of his eyes."

Turning their attention back to the hunt for the Horcruxes, there are new clues to piece together, specifically about the peculiar symbol that keeps cropping up--the circle within the triangle with a line through the center. It is Harry who remembers the first time they ever saw it: on a pendant worn by Xenophilius Lovegood.

The three have been focused on finding and destroying the Horcruxes, but suddenly a new mystery presents itself. They don't know if the symbol they've been seeing is somehow connected to their search, but it does appear to be significant, so Harry, Hermione and Ron set out for the Lovegood house.

Stuart Craig says that the home was patterned after Rowling's description in the book, noting, "Jo specified that the house is a black tower, so I wanted to be true to that. We gave it a deliberate taper and then made it lean, and the interior is as skewed as the exterior."

Dominating the main floor of the house is an old-fashioned printing press, with belts of paper running the length of the ceiling. Since it is also the home of Luna Lovegood, her artwork is proudly displayed on every wall. Evanna Lynch was also asked to lend her inspiration to the décor. McMillan says, "Evanna has a wonderful eye and came up with some great ideas. The end result is wonderfully eclectic, but homey."

When Harry asks Xenophilius about the symbol he wears, it turns out they had the answer with them all along. It is the sign of the Deathly Hallows from an old fable in The Tales of Beetle the Bard, the book left to Hermione by Dumbledore.

As she reads the story aloud, the symbol's meaning is revealed: the triangle is the Invisibility Cloak, to shield the wearer from Death; the circle represents the Resurrection Stone, to recall loved ones from Death; and the straight line denotes the Elder Wand, one more powerful than any other wand in existence. Two of the Deathly Hallows--the Invisibility Cloak and the Resurrection Stone--seem to have some basis in fact. So if the fable is true and the Elder Wand does exist, then Voldemort will stop at nothing to obtain it. And if he does, it might render the search for the Horcruxes meaningless.

Just as the significance of the story becomes clear, so does the danger they're in. Harry, Ron and Hermione must run for their lives, with the Snatchers, led by Scabior (Nick Moran), in close pursuit. The pulse-pounding foot chase was shot in the Swinley Forest in Berkshire, where both David Yates and Greg Powell admit they initially underestimated the athletic abilities of their young cast. The director explains, "I figured I'd have to do one take just to let them get a feel for the rough terrain before telling them they'd have to run faster. Then I called 'Action,' and, whoosh, they were gone!"

Powell echoes, "To be honest, I had told the stuntmen they would have to slow down because they would outpace the actors, but that went completely out the window on the first shot, because the three of them took off like gazelles and left my guys standing in the dust."

Filming the scene also generated some healthy competition between Daniel, Emma and Rupert, who regarded it as more of a race than a chase. "All those years of training with the stunt team finally paid off. There was no question in my mind that I could beat them...not that I'm competitive or anything," Radcliffe deadpans.

"It got quite intense," Grint adds, "especially since we were having to dodge between trees and jump over logs. It was a lot of fun though."

Watson confirms, "It was pretty funny, especially when David had to take us aside and say, 'I just want to remind you that this scene is not about which one of you can run the fastest.' But I definitely gave the boys a run for their money," she smiles.

In the instant the Snatchers are about to overtake them, Hermione flattens Harry with a Stinging Jinx to hide his identity behind extremely swollen features. Special make-up effects designer Nick Dudman and his team used a silicone material to distend Radcliffe's face. "It was tricky," Dudman says "because the only thing on Dan's face that's actually him is one eye. Every detail had to be perfect, down to his eyebrows and stubble, which had to be inserted into the make-up, one hair at a time. My people, Steve Murphy and Paula Eden, did a fantastic job. It took three hours to apply, but Dan was a trouper."

The one feature the Stinging Jinx cannot mask is Harry's lightning scar, which, while distorted, is still barely visible. Believing they may have caught the ultimate prize, the Snatchers deliver their quarry to Malfoy Manor.

The design for the outside of the house was inspired by Hardwick Hall, a Tudor-era mansion that Craig has long admired. He elaborates, "It has these enormous windows, which, especially at night, have a mysterious, slightly threatening, and magical quality to them--huge areas of glass with seemingly nothing but darkness behind them. So the exterior was terrific, and then we invented an interior to match."

At the manor, Bellatrix Lestrange and the Malfoys are waiting. Now the only thing standing between Harry and certain death is his Hogwarts nemesis, Draco, who is faced with a life-altering choice between identifying his former classmate and thereby restoring his family's standing with the Dark Lord, or restoring his own soul.

Radcliffe observes, "What's great about the story is the complexity of good versus evil. It isn't always a clear split between the characters. Even Harry is obviously connected to Voldemort, so there are people we have always seen as evil who have good in them and good people who are seriously flawed."

It turns out that Harry, Hermione and Ron are not the only ones imprisoned at Malfoy Manor. The Death Eaters are also holding Luna Lovegood, the goblin Griphook (Warwick Davis), and the wand maker, Ollivander. A possible rescue comes from an unlikely source...but only at a great sacrifice.

The last house seen in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1" stands in stark contrast to the grandeur of Malfoy Manor: a cottage that appears to be made entirely out of shells. Prefabricated in workshops at Leavesden, the house was then constructed on a beach in Pembrokeshire, Wales. Craig recalls, "We chose that beach because it had great sand dunes and also because David wanted white water and the sound of crashing waves. But those waves came at a price because the beach had incredibly high winds. The entire structure had to be heavily fortified and weighted down with giant water bottles that were several tons each just to keep the whole thing stabilized and stop it from blowing over."

David Heyman remarks, "Being out on location for this film provided a sense of scale and verisimilitude, especially since the story takes us away from the familiar setting of Hogwarts and puts us on the road with Harry, Ron and Hermione."

Composer Alexandre Desplat, who created his first Harry Potter score for "The Deathly Hallows - Part 1," agrees. "Our heroes are constantly in motion, so I wanted the music to follow the thread of their journey, and find just the right balance between the action, suspense and emotion."

"Alexandre's music expresses so many different colors and emotions," says Heyman. "His score has scale and intimacy, darkness and light."

"My goal was to give the film an original musical imprint," Desplat continues. "At the same time, I wanted to carry on the rich musical tradition of the composers who have scored the previous Harry Potter films in keeping with the series' great heritage."

David Barron reflects, "That is what makes these films so incredible to work on--that they have a rock solid foundation, which began with Jo's books. The most important thing to us was to make a film fitting the material she created."

"It all begins and ends with Jo; we wouldn't be here without her," Heyman states. "I feel privileged to have worked on Harry Potter for more than a decade. It has been inspiring, challenging and an awful lot of fun."

Yates says, "I'm particularly thrilled and proud that I'm the director who gets to bring the climax of her great story to the audience. That's what I'm looking forward to."

Zack Snyder To Helm New Superman Movie

by Armand Vaquer

Right, the Man of Steel in a pencil rendering by the late Curt Swan.

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that a director of the new Superman movie has been chosen:

Zack Snyder has been chosen to direct the new Superman movie, which Christopher Nolan is producing for Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures. Negotiations began earlier today.

Snyder, who directed "300" and "Watchmen," had been on the list of helmers ensconced in meetings with Nolan and Warners execs, who in recent weeks have talked to Darren Aronofsky, Ben Affleck, Matt Reeves and Tony Scott.

While the last Superman movie, Superman Returns, had spectacular special effects and it made over $200 million, it is considered a flop as it failed to re-start the franchise.

It is rumored that the movie is to feature the Kryptonian villain, General Zod. Right now, Legendary Pictures and Warner Brothers are being tight-lipped.

But who will play the Man of Steel? Whomever it is, he has to look like Superman, not Superboy. And ditch that last costume design!

Chinese Entertainment Co. Buys Share In Legendary Pictures

Legendary Pictures, the co-producers (with Warner Bros.) of the new American-made Godzilla movie (due to be released in 2012) are now partly owned by a Chinese entertainment company.

The Hollywood Reporter reports:

BEIJING -- It's finally happened: a Chinese entertainment company has bought a piece of Hollywood.

Though Chengtian Entertainment is a subsidiary of Hong Kong-listed Orange Sky Golden Harvest Entertainment, the company that on Monday bought a 3.3% share of "Inception" producers Legendary Pictures of Los Angeles is Beijing-based and focused squarely on China's booming entertainment market.

After months of speculation that a cash-rich Chinese bidder, or one from Bollywood, might pick up a debt laden Hollywood property such as MGM, Chengtian CEO Chen Xiaowei, formerly president of Nasdaq-listed The9 -- one of China's largest online gaming companies -- called Chengtian's partnership with hit-factory Legendary a "match built in heaven."

"Chengtian and Legendary will produce and distribute films in China and around the world and also produce and distribute games," Chen told The Hollywood Reporter before boarding an airplane to meet Legendary founder Thomas Tull for the first time.

It appears the acquisition of a 3.3% share in Legendary Pictures is hoped to pay off for the Chinese at the cash register. Ka-ching!

Remastered GREEN SLIME Coming To DVD From Warner Archives

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Sources: Dread Central / Warner Archives

During my decade long career of writing about sci fi and horror movies there were always two DVD releases that fans have constantly hounded me about. One was "War of the Gargantuas", which thankfully Sony (Classic Media)released in 2008, and the other was "The Green Slime", which had surprisingly remained a no-show, that is, until now.

Warner Bros has finally seen the light and decided to give all the B movie junkies out there what they want. The film will be released through the studios "Warner Archives" service, which is similar to Amazon's "On Demand", where in the DVD won't be produced until someone orders it.

In other words, there aren't copies of "The Green Slime" sitting on a shelf somewhere, when you order it, Warner Bros presses a copy and ships it out to you. It's kinda the studio's way of saving money by not producing DVDs that are just going to sit on store shelves.

However, unlike the Amazon.com service, these DVDs will not just be DVD-R copy of some old print of the film that Warner Bros found laying around someplace. This is a brand-new, remastered, print of "The Green Slime" presented in it's original widescreen (16x9 2.35 scope) format.

From what I hear, the copy is as "pristine" as it can get.

Fans can pre-order their copy of "The Green Slime" from Warner Archives before it's official October 24th release date for only $24.99 - HERE

Here is the info:

Green Slime, The (DVD, Remastered)
Made To Order DVD

Studio: Warner Bros.
Screen Aspect: 16 X 9 LETTERBOX
Run Time: 99 minutes
Packaging Type: Amaray Case
Genre: Horror, Sci-Fi/Fantasy

Synopsis:

After a perilous mission to a huge asteroid, a crew returns to its space station, unaware a bit of ooze from the asteroid clings to a crewman’s uniform. The green goop grows – into murderous, tentacled monsters. And as station members fight to live, gunk from the monsters’ wounds turns into more monsters! That’s the story. Now enjoy as our heroes fight to preserve Earth and, unintentionally, our own senses of humor with a movie that Kevin Thomas of the Los Angeles Times called “one of the funniest made-in-Japan sci-fi monster movies ever.” Kinji Fukasaku, whose later work was championed by Quentin Tarantino, directs. The world would be a far more bleak and joyless place without marvels like The Green Slime.

Putting Legendary Pictures Godzilla 3D (2012) Into Perspective (Part 2)

Written By: Ken Hulsey

Not too long after the rumor about Legendary Pictures proposed "Godzilla" movie hit the net back in August of 2009, fellow MIN writer Armand Vaquer published a very insightful article about his attempts to verify the rumor through his contacts at Toho and what he thought of a Hollywood reboot of the beloved monster franchise.

Since that time we have learned that the rumor was indeed true and Legendary Pictures officially announced it's plans for a new "Godzilla" film several months later in March of this year. However, many aspects of the film have remained top-secret, leading to many unsubstantiated rumors about what we could expect to see come 2012.

Now, after hearing Brian Roger's comments from the 3D Entertainment Summit in Los Angeles this past weekend, I thought it would be a good idea to once again try and put some perspective on what we now know about "Godzilla 3D 2012"

As many fans had already speculated Legendary Pictures upcoming "Godzilla" film actually had it's roots in the unmade Yoshimitsu Banno film "Godzilla 3D To The Max". After Banno tried, and failed, to get his sequel to "Godzilla vs Hedorah" (1971) produced by two separate independent digital film studios he just so happened to cross paths with Rogers, who thought the idea would work if it was produced by a bigger studio. In 2007 the two film makers approached Toho about their plans and were able to secure the rights to produce a 3D Godzilla film here in America.

Though all of these negotiations took place in private behind closed doors, rumors of a 3d Godzilla film were still persistent throughout 2008 and 2009 leading many people, including myself, to speculate that "3D To The Max" was still going forward. Imdb even listed a 2011 release date for the film that lead to more rumors and speculation among American Godzilla fans.

The first thing the interviewer wanted to know was whether Legendary Pictures was going to redesign Godzilla? Rogers was quick to point out that they had no intention of following in the footsteps of Tristar's "G98", the film would feature the Japanese Godzilla, end of story.

Rogers was also quick to put the 'man-in-a-suit vs CGI' battle to rest, stating that this time around Godzilla would be a computer generated monster, not an animated character, but a live-action monster.

That, of course, probably won't sit well with many G purists out there, but in the modern world of film making, that's how it goes.

I don't agree with it, but they didn't ask me for my input did they.

Ever since the film was first announced there has been a lot of heated debate amongst G fans on whether the film should be a modern remake of the original "Gojira" (1954) or a totally original reboot of the monster franchise? Roger's stated that the film would indeed be a reboot, not a remake. The film maker also noted that he believed Legendary Pictures was the perfect studio to handle the delicate job of reinventing Godzilla in the same way that Christopher Nolan reworked the "Batman" franchise and J.J. Abrams reinvisioned "Star Trek" for a modern audience.

I'm sure that we can all breathe a little easier after hearing those comments. It would seem that Legendary Pictures is taking the whole thing seriously.

Rogers also revealed that Godzilla would not be the only monster in the film and that there would be a fight between Big G and another monster, possibly monsters, stating that he knew that is what the fans would want to see. The film maker, however, did not reveal whether or not these monsters would be from Toho's library of creatures, like Mothra or Ghidorah, or brand-new creations.

Let the rumors begin on that one.

Oh, and before I forget, that alleged Godzilla pic that was floating around the Net a few months back is not the new Godzilla. Rogers squashed that one as well.

Okay lets recap, the film will be in 3D, a CGI Godzilla, Japanese Godzilla not GINO, Godzilla vs unknown monsters and it will be like Nolan's "Batman" films.

Sounds pretty damn good to me!

Of course, what Rogers didn't talk about was a director, which has also been the subject of much debate and speculation. I guess that we will still need to be patient on that front.

According to the film maker "Godzilla" is still scheduled for a 2012 release, though he did leave the door open for a possible change.

To say that any news on Legendary Pictures upcoming 3D "Godzilla" film has been scarce is an incredible understatement. After the studio announced the film way back in March, and promised that news on a director was forthcoming, it went into total silence mode.

Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote, two of the most popular Looney Tunes characters of all time, are returning to the big screen in three all-new animated 3D shorts. The studio will attach the cartoon shorts to three of its upcoming family features--all three features to be released this year in 3D. The first short will be seen with "Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore," on July 30th; the second with "Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole," on September 24th; and the third with "Yogi Bear," on December 17th. The announcement was made today by Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. Pictures President of Domestic Distribution.

In the new cartoon shorts, each three minutes in length, Wile E. Coyote is as determined as ever to catch the elusive Road Runner, who continues to leave his hapless nemesis in the dust with a taunting "beep-beep." However, bringing the classic characters into the 21st century, the resourceful Wile E. will now be employing an arsenal of state-of-the-art ACME gadgets to snag his quarry--with all of the action in stereographic 3D.

In making the announcement, Fellman said, "Audiences have always delighted in Wile E. Coyote's dogged pursuit of the Road Runner, with hilarious, albeit predictable, results. We are thrilled to be presenting these characters for the first time in 3D, which will heighten the excitement and humor of the chase, not to mention the impact--at least for Wile E. We're sure these three new adventures will entertain a new generation of fans while reminding us all why these two characters have been beloved for so long."

New Legendary Pictures GODZILLA Design To Be Revealed At Comic Con!

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: Talking Dog Studios

UPDATE: Indeed Legendary Pictures did hand out new t-shirts with their design for "Godzilla" at Comic Con on Saturday. (Not on Friday when I was there ........ curses!)

Many things can be determined from looking at this really cool artwork, the most important of which is the fact that the studio is going to go with the 'classic' Japanese Godzilla look, instead of trying to reinvent the monster like Tristar tried to do back in 1998.

That should put a lot of the fears expressed by the fan base to rest.

It is obvious from this that Legendary is taking this project very seriously and like in the very first Godzilla film (Gojira 1954) the monster will be 'true' bringer of mass destruction.

Which means plenty of city stomping action that should make all of us Godzilla movie fans very, very happy.

Am I reading too much from just a simple t-shirt image. Possibly, but at least you can gauge the 'general' idea of where Legendary Pictures is intending to go with this.

"Old School"

Now if they can only find a director for the film.

Original post:

Though it doesn't appear on any of the San Diego Comic Con propaganda, it appears that "Legendary Pictures" has released the first image from their upcoming "Godzilla' movie at the convention and there will reportedly be a presentation that goes along with it.

I have the image for you here on the left.

Here is a press release from Talking Dog Studios about the event:

When Warner Brothers affiliate Legendary Pictures – responsible for such critically acclaimed films as Inception, Where the Wild Things Are, The Dark Knight, 300, and Watchmen – wanted to use Augmented Reality to announce their latest film, they turned to Saskatchewan’s Talking Dog Studios to provide them with the technology to do so.

This week, Legendary Pictures is at San Diego’s Comic-Con International, the world’s biggest comics and pop culture convention, celebrating the beginning of production on their next film: “Godzilla”. Persons attending the conference will receive a t-shirt with an image of the new Godzilla, and when they look at themselves in a webcam at the Legendary Pictures tradeshow booth, they’ll see a superimposed animation of Godzilla’s “atomic breath” shooting out into the air in front of them from Godzilla’s mouth, complete with black smoke rising from the flames and the ground-shaking bellow of Godzilla’s instantly recognizable roar.

This immersive experience was designed by Talking Dog Studios, of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, and was supervised by Larry Monte of California’s Corporate Images. Talking Dog have been developing various AR applications for the past year, but owner Rob Bryanton sees this as a major step forward: “Augmented Reality is very open-ended, which is great because the possibilities are so wide, but it’s something that is best experienced rather than described,” says Bryanton. “With the Godzilla installation, we were able to quickly create something that our clients were immediately happy with, so we see this as a great recognition of the skillset that we’ve now developed”.

This comes at great surprise to yours truly, who visited the "Legendary Pictures" booth on Friday and saw absolutely zero items about "Godzilla" on display there.

A search of the Comic Con website reveals no such presentation by Legendary Pictures on "Godzilla" listed.

Maybe this was added today or will be added on Sunday, perhapse it was cancelled, regardless the Talking Dog Studios website has this image of the new "Godzilla", which I really love.

More on this as it develops!
