Happy Holidays!

Christmas Day is almost here! Let's celebrate a little by viewing some beautifully painted backgrounds from 1952's "Pluto's Christmas Tree".

This Old Mouse

November 18th, 2008 marks the 80th Birthday of Walt Disney's greatest creation.
With the release of a sound cartoon titled "Steamboat Willie" at the Colony Theater in New York way back in 1928, a whistling Mickey Mouse was introduced to theater going audiences.Technically a cartoon called "Plane Crazy" introduced the mouse months earlier, but due to it's soundtrack, "Steamboat Willie" is considered the first true Mickey Mouse cartoon.
Mickey wasn't Walt's first cartoon creation.
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit starred in many different animated cartoons before Walt lost the rights to the rabbit in 1927.Walt learned a very valuable lesson and went back to the drawing board. "Mortimer the Mouse" had developed on paper, but at the suggestion of Walt's wife, Mickey Mouse became the character's final moniker.
And the rest, as they say, is animated history. I'm sure Mickey and the Gang will still be entertaining audiences in one form or another for many more years.

Christmas Cartoons 4

Up next is "Mickey's Christmas Carol"!
This is a 1984 theatrical release that was shown along side a re-release of The Rescuers.
Walt Disney Animation reimagined the classic Dickens' tale, A Christmas Carol, with Mickey Mouse in the role of Bob Cratchit while Scrooge McDuck plays Ebenezer Scrooge. A smart casting choice on Disney's part.
Here is an article from the January 1984 issue of Starlog giving the "upcoming" theatrical cartoon an exclusive look for fans.

Awesome Runaway Brain Collectable

I stumbled across this article by accident, what a great find.
"Walt Disney's Runaway Brain - Candy Flake Edition" is a great vinal doll packaged in a giant cereal box design.

Not only does it include an incredible figure, but also trading cards and a cool t-shirt sporting rough animation from the 1995 animated short.
Now if only I could afford one...

Mickey Mouse's 60th Birthday Special

Here's a rare find on YouTube, the 1988 special "Mickey's 60th Birthday" in 8 parts!
After Mickey uses magic to repair Roger Rabbit's mess during the celebration, a sorcerer casts a spell on Mickey which makes everyone forget who he is.
The world is a kimble without their favorite mouse apparently...
The special features limited animation/ live action where Mickey guest appears on such 80's shows as "Family Ties" and "Cheers".
Why oh why was the 80's such an awkward time when it came to entertainment? Cheese and corn are at an all-time high during this special.
Personally, I found the Roger Rabbit cameos the best part of this special along with Mickey being harrassed by Norm in Cheers.
