A Look Back: Whitman Comics

Originally created in 1962, Western Publishing started to churn out comic books under the Gold Key Comics label. Gold Key featured a number of licensed properties based on popular TV series of the day, Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros., King Features Syndicate and Hanna-Barbera.
During the 1970s, the comics industry experienced a downswing which forced Gold Key to try different things. Western Publishing dealt with children publications such as Little Golden Books and various coloring books, so they discontinued the "Gold Key" logo and started using the "Whitman" logo which was used on the coloring books to attract young readers.Over time though, Western turned their ever-fading comic title distribution from newsstand to comic book stores which lead to their 1984 demise.

Popeye Vol 3 Already?!

With June 17th being the release date of Popeye the Sailor - Volume 2, fans and collectors would think it would be at least a year before more Popeye came along on DVD, but Warner Home Video has just release info about Popeye the Sailor - Volume 3: 1941 -1943, with 32 shorts, will be released on September 30th!

Warner Home Video has released information for yet another Popeye animation DVD.

Unlike the collector sets, "Popeye & Friends: Volume 1" seems to be aimed towards casual fans and a family audience. See it released the same day as "Popeye the Sailor-Volume 2: 1938-1940 2-disc set" on June 17th!
