Originally created in 1962, Western Publishing started to churn out comic books under the Gold Key Comics label. Gold Key featured a number of licensed properties based on popular TV series of the day, Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros., King Features Syndicate and Hanna-Barbera.
During the 1970s, the comics industry experienced a downswing which forced Gold Key to try different things. Western Publishing dealt with children publications such as Little Golden Books and various coloring books, so they discontinued the "Gold Key" logo and started using the "Whitman" logo which was used on the coloring books to attract young readers.Over time though, Western turned their ever-fading comic title distribution from newsstand to comic book stores which lead to their 1984 demise.
