'Go Topless Day' Coverage Easy Publicity for Bizarre Raelian Cult
SF Weekly (blog)

Admit it, you looked. Who wouldn't? A bevy of topless women, and men in bikini tops illustrating the oddities of forcing women to cover up -- that gets people's attention, even in San Francisco.

That's just what cult leader Claude Vorilhan -- aka Rael -- is counting on. He and his followers have often taken extreme, publicity-grabbing steps to bring attention to their raison d'ĂȘtre: Claiming that humans are the creation of UFO-riding aliens from outer space, and Rael has been tasked with spreading their message and preparing an "embassy" for their return.

"Claude Vorilhan will get his people to do whatever it takes to get him in the paper," says Rick Ross, a natinally recognized expert on cults. "You know who they remind me of? The Westboro Baptist Church. They would picket George Washington if he were alive to get their names in the paper. Their leader [Rael] is a press report junkie."

Former BBC Economics Editor Weighs In On Bentwaters UFO
Technorati (blog)

Former BBC economics editor Evan Davis has published an article at BBC.co.uk debunking the 1980 Rendlesham Forest (UK) UFO close encounter reported by U.S. military personnel stationed at nearby RAF Bentwaters.

If you aren't familiar with the Bentwaters UFO incident, here's a primer:

In 1980, RAF Bentwaters in Suffolk, England was jointly operated by the RAF and the 81st Tactical Fighter Wing of the USAF. It was the largest tactical fighter wing in the Air Force.

Former Bentwaters Deputy Base Commander Col. Charles Halt, now retired, has stated repeatedly that, in December of 1980, he witnessed a "blinking" UFO moving through nearby Rendlesham Forest. Other personnel under Halt's command who were deployed to investigate have testified that they approached a craft and examined it for 45 minutes.

The False Lights of Durham
Fortean Times

For much of the 19th century, a 16km stretch of the rocky Durham coastline between the rivers Wear and Tyne was notorious as a graveyard for shipping. From the 1860s, more than 160 vessels were wrecked after running aground on submerged rocks between Marsden and the village of Whitburn, just a mile from the shore.

The hazardous reputation of Whitburn Steel, as the rocks are known, worsened during the Industrial Revolution. Bulk cargos such as coal and iron ore were more easily moved by sea than rail and the demands of heavy industry in Tyneside led to a dramatic increase in coastal shipping. Smoke pollution from industrial cities like Sunderland added to the problems faced by vessels that hugged the coastline as they approached Tyneside from the North Sea.

These facts are not disputed, but the bizarre circumstances surrounding the sharp spike in the number of shipwrecks have now faded from living memory. The National Trust guidebook to the coast – now a Nature Reserve – mentions rumours of “local people luring ships onto the rocks with false lights in order to plunder their cargoes”. But no reference is made to the fear and anger which gripped fishing communities as losses mounted and suspicions grew.

Between 1864 and 1870, wrecks became a regular occurrence every winter. For example, on the night of 24 November 1865 the schooner Test came ashore as it followed the coast towards the Tyne. Fortunately, the crew was rescued by the Whitburn lifeboat, manned by fishermen from the village. Afterwards, Captain Jerome Major testified that all had been well until he saw two bright lights in the sky that he wrongly identified as the lighthouse at the mouth of the Tyne. As he approached the lights, he realised his vessel was closing rapidly on the shore, but it was too late to turn around. The Test struck Whitburn Steel and was wrecked. A steam tug and a brig met the same fate before the end of the year and a number of others had a narrow escape.

China discloses UFO reality: Aliens sending UFO probes here
Allnewsweb.com

Dramatic events have taken place in China over the last few days and that nation's thousands of UFO researchers and enthusiasts are reeling in shock.

One of the heads of China's famous Purple Mountain Astronomical Observatory, Prof. Wang Sichao, has gone public admitting the UFOs are real and aliens are visiting Earth and that the observatory has observed their craft many times. The admittance of UFO reality was made yesterday within a official speech entitled tellingly 'China's UFO truth'. This news has been extensively reported in China.

The key points that Wang Sichao have disclosed are that:

•Aliens are visiting Earth on R & D expeditions
•These UFOs are probes manned by robots.
•These craft travel at eighty percent the speed of light.
•These craft have been seen by the observatory many times at between 150 and 1500 kilometers above Earth.
•The aliens might use Nuclear fusion to propel their craft
•39 years of work at Purple Mountain Observatory has led Wang to believe these craft use Earth's gravity to manouvre and stay aloft

Canton's close encounter with Roswell UFO
Canton Repository

Ralph Multer's blue-collar life collided with the extraterrestrial in Canton many years ago.

A wounded World War II veteran who walked with a limp, Multer exhibited a gruff exterior. He liked to spin stories about his days as a gunner's mate on a Navy warship, including ones about the Battle of Iwo Jima. Multer worked on cars and rode a motorcycle. His nickname was Bear, a reference to his large frame. And on occasion, he enjoyed a few swallows of vodka.

At 22 and married, Multer worked hard to support his wife, driving a truck for the Timken Co.

He wasn't normally given to far-flung tales of flying saucers and little green men. Until, that is, the summer of 1947.

Multer is said to be Canton's connection to the most famous UFO story in world history: The alleged crash of an alien spacecraft near Roswell, N.M., in July 1947.

He told loved ones he hauled material from the crashed spaceship to one of the Timken plants in Canton that summer. A Timken furnace could not dent, damage or melt the UFO wreckage. Not even slightly.

An FBI agent made it very clear. Don't tell anybody about the covert operation. Keep it hush-hush.

That's a fascinating story. A whopper. Is it true? Can it be verified? Especially when you consider Multer died in 1982. Could a company of Timken's iconic stature be complicit in perhaps the greatest government cover-up of all time?

Academician: Aliens exist, but also have weaknesses
People's Daily Online

Wang Sichao, a researcher and planetary astronomer at the Purple Hills Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that he believes extraterrestrial beings do exist and their UFOs have the ability to visit our earth. However, he disagrees with British scientist Stephen Hawking, who believes an encounter with aliens would spell disaster to human beings.

Wang has done the astronomical observation work for 39 years and he publicized his opinion on a science forum held in Guangzhou today.

Wang also found that in the terrestrial space between the height of 130 kilometers and 1,500 kilometers, UFOs have appeared many times. Their flying speed is much slower than the first cosmic velocity. Some are even as slow as 0.29 kilometers per second and they can fly in the 1,460 kilometers' height for more than 25 minutes.

WalesOnline

The nurse who claims to have seen a glowing UFO on a hillside has broken her silence over Ministry of Defence suggestions that it was nothing more than a combination of an earthquake and a meteor.

Pat Evans, whose description of the glowing ball she saw on North Wales’s Berwyn Mountains has prompted more than three decades of debate among Ufologists and scientists, described the MoD claims as “rubbish”.

And retired nurse and midwife Mrs Evans, who rarely speaks of the event, repeated her claim that she saw a UFO on January 23, 1974, in the incident known as the “Welsh Roswell”.
