Crossovers are nothing new to comics, so when it was announced that Wildstorm was going to publish a mini-series featuring Mulder and Scully from "The X-Files" investigating a series of murders caused by the vampires from "30 Days of Night", I'm certain that nobody was overwhelmed by shock or surprise.
Though comic books that mash together pop culture icons generally fall rather flat and often times leave fans of both properties shaking their heads, this melding of TV's most popular FBI agents and movie land's most ruthless blood-suckers looks, at least on the outset, like a different breed of cat.
At least Wildstorm has assembled a rather interesting, and talented, team for this "The X-Files: 30 Days of Night" short run. The story for this one comes from a creative collaboration between original '30 Days' creators Steve Niles and Adam Jones along with Tool guitarist Adam Jones, with artwork by Tom Mandrake (The Spectre).
Here is the story:
When evidence of a possible cannibal killer in Wainright, Alaska draws the attention of the FBI, Agents Mulder and Scully draw the less-than-glamorous assignment. But all is not as it seems once the agents are on the ground. Not only has the long seasonal darkness begun to fall, but there's something unnatural about a few of the locals. And what does a chilling, mysterious black ship have to do with the murders?
Don't Mulder and Scully always get the 'less-than-glamorous' assignments?
Anyway, the plot sounds like the kind of stuff that made "The X-Files" one of the best sci fi series ever, so this new comic should be something all of us fans should be able to embrace.
