Yeah, I broke down and picked up a copy of the
Canadian release of
Nelvana's
My Pet Monster: The Complete Series by
kaBOOM! Entertainment.

This animated series is your typical
80's cartoon based on a popular toy. Unfortunately the cartoon did not become as popular as the stuffed toy, so it only lasted for
1 season from
1986 - 1987.
This
2 disc DVD set includes
13 episodes with
16 cartoons in total.

The series revolves around a boy and his stuffed toy who magically comes to life when his handcuffs are removed.
Max, along with his sister
Jill and best bud
Chuckie, try to hide
the garbage-eating Monster from the snooping eyes of their nosy neighbor
Mr. Hinkle and his pet poodle,
Princess and protect Monster from
Beastur who wants to take Monster back to
Monsterland.

In one episode, Beastur kidnaps Jill which forces Monster, Max and Chuckie to enter Monsterland through one of Beastur's dimensional doorways. Once there, they meet a trio of friendly characters called the
Monster Pets.
(which were currently available at the local toy store)

Personally I think
Those Characters From Cleveland Inc. missed an opportunity by not producing toys based on Beastur and his
Scare Squad.

Other adventures had Monster becoming a rock star, champion surfer, most popular kid at school and even a superhero.

All in all, My Pet Monster wasn't a terrible 80's cartoon. It was based on a toy, but the stories were imaginative and the animation wasn't limited. It had it's cliches but it was a better example of most other cartoons being produced at the time.
