Alvarez's First Warner Bros Story

Featuring none other but the Warner Brothers and their sister, Dot.
According to the following article, "For Whom Nobel Toils" is the very first assignment David Alvarez illustrated for DC Comics. He then moved over to the Looney Tunes book with "Frankentweety".

You can find this story in Animaniacs #39, first published in 1998.

Rocko on DVD...When You Place an Order

According to this TVshowsonDVD.com article, Amazon has struck a deal with Nickelodeon and Paramount to release various programs with a "burn-on-demand" system.
http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Site-News-Nickelodeon-Amazon-CreateSpace/10375
Essentially, a customer orders and Amazon burns a copy of their order to be shipped.
An interesting way to purchase DVDs. Amazon is calling it their "CreateSpace" program.

Garfield Returns to TV

According to Mark Evanier's website, "The Garfield Show" will be debuting in 2009 with Frank Welker voicing the lasagna-loving feline.

It's great that the fat cat is hitting airwaves again, but if the show sports the "ugly" CG look as the recent DVD films, personally I won't be tuning in.

Reality Toon

It really seems that countries across the Atlantic really love classic animation! So much so that a French production company has developed the first in a series of "Reality Toons".
http://www.realitytoon.com/pages/uk/index_uk2.html
The creators of this new series starring Dr. Kill & Mr. Chance understand that classic cartoons were inspired by slapstick comedies like Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin. To quote their site: "Let's imagine that thanks to the wizardry of technology, we can merge the worlds of "Buster Keaton" and "Tex Avery" into one...It is not the first time that works of fiction blend animated cartoons with reality, but "Reality Toon" revolutionizes the genre."
Visit their official website to learn more about the players and creators and to view the very first "Reality Toon".

Fish Faced

There's just something about seeing someone smacked in the face by a fish that makes me laugh:Oh 1940's comics, you have the prescription for the daily blues...

Proposed Warner Bros Shows?

I recently came across a great blog by someone who has been in the animation industry since 1987.
http://kupczyk.blogspot.com/
Since 2000, Dave Kupczyk has been a character designer/developer for many animation companies. He has posted several character designs for series that never got past the development stage at Warner Bros Television Animation.
Proposed ideas included shows like a Top Cat revival, a Macy Gray show(?), a teen Thundercats incarnation and a series based on the Monkeyman and O'Brien comic series! At least Warner Bros has been considering other ideas besides Scooby-Doo & Batman...
Check out Dave's blog for more awesome artwork!

Jetsons by Wray & DeStefano

Here's a cool looking comic I found in a 1997 issue of DC/Cartoon Network's "The Flintstones and The Jetsons".
"Robo-George" features artwork by Bill Wray and Stephen DeStefano with excellent color by Bernie Mireault.
Unfortunately I never collected anymore of these DC/Cartoon Network titles. I wonder if any other stories featured great artwork like this one?

Little Golden Inspirations

Here's some more inspirational artwork from a classic Little Golden Book, "Walt Disney's Grandpa Bunny".Unfortunately not the original 1951 story, but a 2007 re-printing. It seems that Random House Inc. is getting wise of the many collectors and are now releasing re-prints of collectible stories in the form of "a Little Golden Book: Classic".
Grandpa Bunny is filled with beautiful paintings. This is great artwork.

YouTube Gets Goofy

To my fellow animation-loving Canadians, the 2007 Goofy cartoon has finally been posted on YouTube.
"How to Hook Up Your Home Theater" was released theatrically with "National Treasure 2" last holiday season. It has been available for purchase on iTunes, but only in the US store. So if you haven't seen it, or you simply want to see it again, watch it here:

More Brandt & Cervone T&J Cartoons

There are more Spike Brandt and Tony Cervone directed cartoons on the just-released Tom & Jerry Tales Volume 5 DVD.They had their hand at writing & directing another episode consisting of 3 cartoons.
"Xtreme Trouble", "A Life Less Guarded" and "Sasquashed" are nicely timed and animated. Both directors worked on another episode on Volume 4.
http://jedaniels-adventures.blogspot.com/2008/03/brandt-cervone-on-t-tales.htmlXtreme Trouble has Jerry Mouse pursuing a cheese truck on his skateboard while Tom pursues in chase using various "Xtreme" equipment. In a A Life Less Guarded, Tom & Droopy Dog compete to be the best for the position of lifeguard. Droopy receives some help from Jerry while a caricature of Tex Avery and Miss Shapely look on. She's "great with figures"!Tom goes Bigfoot hunting in Sasquashed so Jerry and Tuffy help out the hungry Andy Dick/Paul Lynd-esque Sasquatch elude him.The bear from Tex Avery's Rock-a-bye Bear (1952) makes a guest appearance.A lot of in-jokes were inserted into these cartoons and it seems only a fan of the Golden Age would catch them all. The bear cameo is only funny if you've seen the original cartoon. Most kids were probably left wondering why he was yelling at Tom? lolSpike & Tony really understand how to handle these classic characters and I hope to see more of their cartoons on future volumes!

Rocky Horror Picture Show Redux?

It would seem that MTV is making plans to remake the 1975 cult classic musical comedy film that parodies science fiction and horror films.
http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/index.php?id=58031
No cast for the new revamp has been announced, but rumors have been flying around the internet about Marilyn Manson being considered for the role of Dr. Frank N. Furter....

Invading Your TV on DVD

Warner Home Video has finally released the 1990 animated series produced by Steven Spielberg, "Tiny Toon Adventures"!Tiny Toons was basically a Warner Bros celebration of their Looney Tunes heritage. 1990 marked Bugs Bunny's 50 birthday so Warner Bros tried to create new cartoons based on the classics that were created at Termite Terrace during the Golden Age.The series follows the adventures of various Tiny Toons while they attend ACME Looniversity in order to graduate as official cartoon characters. The original Looney Tunes cast helps out the youngsters as the staff of the school.
Buster Bunny gets advice from Bugs Bunny.Daffy Duck teaches Plucky Duck to steal the spotlight.Furrball is instructed to catch mice by Sylvester.Dizzy Devil tries to eat bunnies with help from the Tazmanian Devil.Elmer Fudd teaches Elmyra to hug and love forest creatures insted of hunting them.Calamity Coyote recieves falling advice from Wile E. Coyote.Babs Bunny searches out "canine versions" of Honey & Bosko. The series had many different animation houses working on episodes so the art/animation style varies from time-to-time. The characters often fall off-model but it gives the series an interesting twist in visuals. It's a fun ride to revisit these cartoons and they are a great example of things to come during the 90's which some people have dubbed the Silver Age of Animation. This 4 disc set features the first half of the first season that contains 35 episodes. 17 episodes run for a complete 22 minute story while the remaining 18 are made up of 3 short cartoons. There is an interesting special feature called "From Looney Tunes to Tiny Toons - A Wacky Evolution!" that explains the origin of the series by going back to the classics. Can't wait for Season 1: Volume 2 to be released!
